WHAT IS SCHOOL-BASED COUNSELING AT P4K?
School-based Counselors within District 75 support students in meeting his/her goals and promote the generalization of skills in school, at home and in the community, based on IEP mandate. District 75 Counselors can be School Psychologists, School Social Workers, or Guidance Counselors. The P4K Counseling team is made up of one School Psychologist, and two School Counselors. Counseling can be provided to our students through individual sessions, group sessions, or both, depending on the students’ social and emotional needs, and based on the IEP mandate. We help students that have emerging social developmental skills to recognize, modify and self-manage behaviors that interfere with learning. Through various techniques utilizing play therapy, modeling, role-playing, etc., we can target skills such as positive peer interactions, self-regulation, other coping abilities, positive attention-seeking, self-confidence, self-advocacy, etc. Counselors aid in the development of functional behavior assessments resulting in behavioral intervention plans to extinguish negative behaviors. School-based Counseling is not intended to meet all the social and emotional needs of a student. It is intended as a service to provide additional support in the area of social and emotional development to those who demonstrate a base of emerging social developmental skills, providing a more individualized approach to complement school-wide and classroom behavioral management.
